Metro basics
Fares
- $1.25 using SmarTrip
$1.35 using cash - $3 express routes using SmarTrip
$3.10 express routes using cash - Bus-to-bus transfers are free (good for three hours).
- Senior/disabled fare is 60¢.
- $1.65 minimum, $4.50 maximum based on distance traveled. For fares between stations, click on your starting station on the system map and choose "Fares and times between stations."
- Metrorail's senior/disabled fare is one-half the regular fare.
- Transfers- free within Metrorail. Rail-to-bus transfer:
- 35¢ on regular routes using SmarTrip, 45¢ using cash.
- $2.10 on express routes using SmarTrip, $2.20 using cash.
Hours
7 days a week
Metrorail opens 5 a.m. weekdays and 7 a.m. on weekends. It closes at midnight Sunday to Thursday. On Friday and Saturday nights, it stays open until 3 a.m.
How to ride Metrobus
- Wait for the bus at a stop.
- Have exact change, pass or transfer. Drivers cannot make change.
- Destinations are displayed on the front and side of buses.
- Signal the driver as your stop approaches by pulling the signal cord. If you do not know when your stop is, ask the driver to announce it.
How to ride Metrorail
- Metro stations are marked by large brown columns. The colored strips indicate the lines served by the station.
- You need a farecard, pass or SmarTrip card to ride Metrorail. Farecards and one day passes can be purchased at the stations. Passes can be bought at selected locations around the area.
- Follow the signs to your platform. Flashing lights at the platform's edge let you know a train is coming.
- The train's destination is displayed over the train's front and side windows. The line color is displayed on the front and back of the trains.
